Drowning in Local Produce
A terrible problem to have, I know...
Week 5, and these words make me want to cry:
5th CSA Share: Kohlrabi, Snow Peas and Carrots
Oh boy. I should also mention that the kohlrabi that I claimed would be consumed last night was, in fact, not. Not a sugar snap pea either. Let's just say, Jay had to work late last night, and he considered not having to eat more kohlrabi a fringe benefit.
Here's the rest of this week's share - I can't really explain how I ended up with something different than shown on the Clagett's list... but here's what I've got:
- Purple kohlrabi - the largest one I've ever seen. Weighs 4 lbs. Seriously.
- 2 lbs kale
- 1 onion
- 1 lb carrots
- 1 lb sugar snap peas
- 2 small zucchinis
That oughta do.
I mentioned before that I was making carrot cake muffins... Look, I'm calling them muffins because that means they're acceptable to eat for breakfast. Icing and all. They're made with local carrots and eggs, that means they are healthy. Don't judge.
I made these , following the recipe almost exactly (except for adding a bit more cinnamon because there can never be enough). They don't - in any way - look pretty like hers (or otherwise, really), but they're yummy.
Off to...
... stare at the produce hoping it'll inspire me (and fit in the fridge)
... make frozen pizza
... roast some sugar snap peas
... drink some beer
And, surely, there will also be cupcakes muffins consumed.

Wow, you are really getting the produce. Zucchini? Already?
I know! I don’t know what they’re doing over there, but I’m not complaining. Last year it was week 7 before we saw the first zucchini. Maybe it was the hot, hot weather we had?
That can’t hurt. But I have tons of squash that I started inside and set out on 30 April and I have yet to see a ripe fruit, and I’m in MD too, not far enough away to be in another climate zone, ha ha. Maybe they started them (or have them) in a greenhouse? I’m keeping an eye on what the local farms are doing though, and assume that they’re going to be producing a little ahead of schedule of me…I want to buy large quantities of tomatoes and make a lot of sauce and salsa and BBQ sauce and ketchup this year, and even though my own planting was pretty large and optimistic (12 tomato plants and 12 pepper plants) I still don’t think I can produce enough to keep our family in canned tomato products for a whole year….
You have chicken and eggs from Polyface, huh? Did you drive out there? Or did you get them from Dupont Farmer’s Market? I think I remember reading that they sell there…I want to head up there one Sunday soon.
I’m pretty sure that they did start some things in a greenhouse. There’s one I can see from the pickup point.
I’m planning the same thing – a bonanza of preserving/canning this year. So happy I decided to take the canning class at Accokeek because now I feel more like I can do it! I haven’t quite figured out how much we’ll need for the whole year…
I get my Polyface goods from their buying club – polyfaceyum.com – you order in advance and they have drop off points all over the area about every 5 weeks. I don’t know if there’s one super close to you, but it might be a better option than hoping they have want you want at Dupont.
